Age of Information: Whittle Index for Scheduling Stochastic Arrivals
نویسنده
چکیده
Age of information is a new concept that characterizes the freshness of information at end devices. This paper studies the age of information from a scheduling perspective. We consider that a base-station updates many users on stochastic information arrivals over a wireless broadcast network, where only one user can be updated for each time. In this context, we aim at developing a transmission scheduling algorithm for minimizing the long-run average age. To develop a lowcomplexity transmission scheduling algorithm, we apply the Whittle’s framework for restless bandits. We successfully derive the Whittle index in a closed form and establish the indexability, by introducing a post-action age. Based on the Whittle index, we propose a scheduling algorithm, while experimentally showing that it closely approximates an age-optimal scheduling algorithm.

A stochastic control approach for scheduling multimedia transmissions over a polled multiaccess fading channel
We develop scheduling strategies for carrying multimedia traffic over a polled multiple access wireless network with fading. We consider a slotted system with three classes of traffic (voice, streaming media and file transfers). A Markov model is used for the fading and also for modeling voice packet arrivals and streaming arrivals. The performance objectives are a loss probability for voice, m...
متن کاملCan Decentralized Status Update Achieve Universally Near-Optimal Age-of-Information in Wireless Multiaccess Channels?
In an Internet-of-Things system where status data are collected from sensors and actuators for time-critical applications, the freshness of data is vital and can be quantified by the recently proposed age-of-information (AoI) metric. In this paper, we first consider a general scenario where multiple terminals share a common channel to transmit or receive randomly generated status packets. The o...
متن کاملIntrusion Detection in Resource-Constrained Cyber Networks: A Restless Multi-Armed Bandit Approach
We consider a large-scale cyber network with N components. Each component is either in a healthy state (0) or an abnormal state (1). Due to intrusions, the state of each component transits from 0 to 1 over time according to an arbitrary stochastic process. At each time, a subset of K (K < N) components are probed and those observed in abnormal states are fixed. The objective is to design a dyna...
متن کاملOptimality of Index Policies for Stochastic Scheduling with Switching Penalties
We investigate the impact of switching penalties on the nature of optimal scheduling policies for systems of parallel queues without arrivals. We study two types of switching penalties incurred when switching between queues: lump sum costs and time delays. Under the assumption that the service periods of jobs in a given queue possess the same distribution, we derive an index rule that deenes an...
متن کاملThe Age of Information: Real-Time Status Updating by Multiple Sources
We examine multiple independent sources providing status updates to a monitor through simple queues. We formulate a status-age timeliness metric and derive a general result for the average status age that is applicable to a wide variety of multiuser service systems. An alternate technique for evaluating status age based on stochastic hybrid systems is also introduced. For first-come first-serve...
